Women Development

Women’s condition in Nepal is even worse compared to their average situation in the world. Despite positive and improving reports in the situation, there is a long way to go to really make them feel that they are not exploited and discriminated. The female literacy rate of Nepal is about 35 percent, according to recent report, compared to male literacy rate of 63 percent. This vast difference exists not only in educational sector but also in almost each sector. The education is the foundation of awareness and further development. When they are barred from education, there is chance of discrimination's being unreported forcing women to be quiet. The women in Nepal are exploited in many aspects. Sexual abuse and girl trafficking still persists which demands adoption of immediate measures to prevent the situation from being more worsened. Most of the victims of human trafficking in Nepal are girls who end up in the brothel of Indian cities.   The female victims of domestic violence are kept secret with the fear of losing social reputation specially to be prevented form possible refusal from their male counterparts and there no clear law to deal with the situation.

In the remote villages of Nepal, women take care almost everything from bringing up children, manage food, taking care of cattle, collecting fodder and firewood to working in the fields. Despite their significant contribution in the family and society, they are mistreated and blamed for minor mistakes.

The situation of Nepalese women seems to be improving in cities but the scene in the remote villages and hinterland is not changing at all. They are the victim of religion, culture and their male ‘guardians’. The Chaupadi system in western hill region of Nepal is yet to be rooted out, the Kamlari system in West Terai is still allowing to sell innocent teenage girls to unknown masters.

Nepal

Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. The mountainous north contains eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, including the highest, Mount Everest. The fertile and humid south is heavily urbanized. By some measures, Hinduism is practiced by a greater majority of people in Nepal than in any other nation.

The natural scenery, high mountains, incomparable cultural heritage and numerous specialties have made Nepal a well-known destination in the world tourism map with a distinct image of its own. However, the development of tourism is limited in number and within the certain areas of the country only. The new government has shown greater concerns about the real value of tourism and its role in contributing to economic growth, poverty alleviation, equity and overall tourism development in the country.

Therefore, the government is placing high priority on the tourism sector in its new economic development policy. As there is a favorable politicalsituation in the country, the government is all geared towards economic revolution in next 10 years for the up-liftment of the masses. In this connection, government of Nepal in consultation with Nepalese Tourism Industry, concerned organizations and experts decided to launch a national tourism campaign “Nepal Tourism Year 2011“. This announcement reflects the government’s anticipation to bring into at least one million international tourists in Nepal by the year 2011 and spread the benefits of tourism to the people at large. The national campaign also indicates the tourism industry’s exigency to organize a tourism promotion campaign having wider impact.

My Country(Nepal)

Nepal (pronounced /nəˈpal/ nə-PAHL, /-pal/ -PAWL;[5] Nepali: नेपाल Nepal.ogg [neˈpal] (help·info)), officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, is a himalayan country in South Asia and, as of 2010, the world's most recent nation to become a republic. It is bordered to the north by the People's Republic of China, and to the south, east, and west by the Republic of India. With an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 30 million, Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass[6] and the 41st most populous country. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and the country's largest metropolitan city.

Nepal is a country of highly diverse and rich geography, culture, and religions. The mountainous north has eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including the highest, Sagarmatha, known in English as Mount Everest. The fertile and humid south is heavily urbanized. It contains over 240 peaks more than 20,000 ft (6,096 m) above sealevel.[7]

By some measures, Hinduism is practised by a larger majority of people in Nepal than in any other nation.[8] Buddhism, though a minority faith in the country, is linked historically with Nepal as the birthplace of the Buddha. About half of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.[9]

A monarchy throughout most of its history, Nepal was ruled by the Shah dynasty of kings from 1768, when Prithvi Narayan Shah unified its many small kingdoms. In 2006, however, a decade-long People's Revolution by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) along with several weeks of mass protests by all major political parties of Nepal culminated in a peace accord, and the ensuing elections for the constituent assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the abdication of the last Nepali monarch Gyanendra Shah and the establishment of a federal democratic republic in May 28, 2008.[10] The first President of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav, was sworn in on 23 July 2008.

Status Of Nepalese Women

About half of the world’s population is of women. In the western countries, both men and women enjoy equality of rights. But the situation in most of the Asian and African nation’s women is different. There is a large scaled discrimination between men and women. Discrimination starts from home itself, parents treat male and female child differently and have expectations based on the cultural differences (Nalini sastry, 2000).

Nalini reports socializing process is the responsible factors to differentiate male and female by their parents. In the past, in Europe and in America, there were lots of conflicts raised and for rights of women. They had protest or demonstration for their participation on various sectors of status uplifting.

These days the situation of women in western countries has changed a lot. They have been enjoying their freedom. They have adopted the culture of equity between both sexes and being treated both men and women by their  caliber rather than gender. They have given emphasis on the capabilities and education level of women and weakness of women like physical structure, softness etc were least highlighted. But still Nepalese women were lacking far behind than western women in their freedom and access to education, economic resources and political power.

The United Nations has defined the status of women in the context of their access to knowledge, economic resources, and political power, as well as their personal autonomy in the process of decision making. When Nepalese woman's status is analyzed in this light, the picture is generally bleak. In the early 1990s, Nepal was a rigidly patriarchate society. In virtually every aspect of life, women were generally subordinate to men.

The economic contribution of women was substantial, but largely unnoticed because their traditional role was taken for granted. When employed, their wages normally were 25 percent less than those paid to men.

Impacts Of Multinational In Nepal

Nepal is recognized as a LDC,i.e. Least Developed Countries which makes it a very suitable target for multinationals to set up their business with.Nepal would face various impacts of the multinational companies.Firstly, the main reason behind multinationals wanting to carry out their businesses in a country like Nepal is to have a lower costs of production, that is to say, cheap labor, low input costs, avoid import costs. And also they would be likely to have an influence over the politics of the country as the multinationals get a red carpet welcoming since they bring with them a enormous amount of foreign revenue.
The entrance of such multinationals posses various impacts.A country like ours has been facing a huge difference between number of exports of goods and services and their imports. So, the establishment of such large multinational firms could help in the balance of payment(B.O.P).And also these companies generate huge employment opportunities, which on the one hand ,solves the brain drain problem and on the other hand, provide jobs to those involved in agriculture in limp periods, making the population more skillful and increasing their efficiency and quality.
Similarly, the multinationals set up in Nepal produce surplus amount which can be exported to other countries.Apart from this,it increases competition between local companies and multinationals which results in more consumer choices, efficiency and creates a “SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST” kind of situation. As a result companies are compelled to lower their prices in order to survive.Likewise, there can be a transfer of technology i.e skill transfer. The establishment of multinationals creates localization of industries and also enhances the infrastructural development. The multinationals create a political understanding between the companies’ country of origin and the host country.
